OpenAI is extending ChatGPT's reach to educational and nonprofit sectors. They're rolling out ChatGPT Edu for universities and offering nonprofits discounted access through ChatGPT Team.
ChatGPT Edu, powered by the faster GPT-4o model, enables universities to responsibly integrate AI into various tasks like resume reviews and grant writing, with enhanced security measures and no data usage for training. Nonprofits can apply for the $20 per month per user discount, while larger organizations can avail a 50% discount on ChatGPT Enterprise.
2. Mistral releases Codestral, its first generative AI model for code

Mistral, a French AI startup backed by Microsoft, has unveiled Codestral, its first generative AI model for coding. Trained on 80+ programming languages, including Python and Java, Codestral helps developers with coding tasks like completing functions and writing tests. However, its licensing restrictions limit commercial use due to potential copyright issues from its training data.
Despite its impressive 22 billion parameters, Codestral's performance improvements are considered modest compared to competitors. Its release reignites debates over the reliability of code-generating models in programming. Mistral launches Codestral on its Le Chat platform and paid API, integrating it into various app frameworks and development environments.
3. Microsoft’s Copilot is now on Telegram

Microsoft's Copilot, a generative AI tool that creates text and answers questions, is now a chatbot on Telegram. In beta, it lets you chat naturally, answering general or specific questions, from movie recommendations to current baseball games. Just search @CopilotOfficialBot in Telegram—it's free but requires your phone number.
Microsoft has integrated Copilot into its products like Microsoft 365 and Teams, as well as Copilot+ PCs. Its move to third-party platforms like Telegram suggests Microsoft wants its AI to be everywhere. Other tech giants are also exploring AI chatbots; Meta is testing Meta AI on Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, while Google's Gemini and Snapchat's ChatGPT offer similar features.
4. Amazon is rolling out AI voice search to Fire TV devices

Amazon is adding a new AI-powered search feature to Fire TV, allowing Alexa to answer questions about TV shows and movies. It understands natural language and can provide tailored recommendations based on actors, genres, and more. This feature, announced last September, will roll out in a few weeks to U.S. customers with Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 or later. It's part of Amazon's efforts to enhance Fire TV with AI-driven capabilities, following previous initiatives like an AI image generator and Alexa experiences for gaming and music creation.
5. Perplexity AI’s new feature will turn your searches into shareable pages

Perplexity AI is jumping on the AI-powered web page summaries trend with its latest offering, Perplexity Pages. This feature allows users, whether free or paid, to create visually appealing reports or articles effortlessly. By inputting a prompt and choosing an audience type, users can generate detailed articles with various sections. They have the flexibility to edit, add, or remove sections as needed.
Perplexity also assists users in finding and incorporating relevant media such as images and videos. These pages are not only publishable and searchable but also shareable, facilitating follow-up questions and converting existing conversation threads into pages. Perplexity aims to make research more accessible and shareable, leveraging its core technology.
Despite AI's significant role, Perplexity emphasizes that users remain in control of content and organization decisions, framing its tool as information curation rather than content generation. The feature is gradually rolling out to users and will eventually be accessible on both web and mobile platforms.
6. ElevenLabs debuts AI-powered tool to generate sound effects

May 31st, 2024
Source: ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs, a voice cloning startup, has launched a new tool enabling users to generate sound effects via prompts. With options like "waves crashing" or "metal clanging," users can produce snippets of sounds or even instrumental music clips up to 22 seconds long. Free users are allotted 10,000 character generations per month, equating to around 60 sound effects. They must credit "elevenlabs.io" when using the generated content. The startup trained its model using Shutterstock's licensed audio library and tested it with video game developers, film producers, and marketers during alpha testing. However, the tool prohibits sound generation for certain topics like self-harm and fraud. While AI-powered sound generation is a burgeoning field, ElevenLabs faces competition from other companies like Stability AI, Google, OpenAI, Meta, TikTok, and Adobe, each with their own music generation models or tools.
